Writing a Blog for Your School

Digital Consultants • September 21, 2022

Writing blogs for your school is a marketing channel (similar to social media, or email marketing) that helps your school to grow and gets your school more online visibility.  Is blogging worth it? Yes! …if you want more website visitors!  Every time you create and publish a blog post, it's one more indexed page on your website.  This means one more opportunity for you to show up on the search engine results page (SERP) and drive traffic to your website.

More reasons why blogs benefit schools (try saying that 5x fast!):

  • Blogging helps you get discovered on social media. When you write an article you’re creating content that people can share on social media which helps expose your school to a new audience.
  • By adding a lead-generating call-to-action to every blog post you increase your chances of turning your website traffic into potential enrolments.
  • If your blogs have valuable content and answer common questions their readers and customers have, you will establish yourself as a trusted leader or authority.

Blogging provides long-term results since you can continue to get traffic from that blog post for years to come.

Let’s get blogging!  Here’s where to start:

  1. Identify your blog’s purpose
  2. Choose two or three objectives e.g., to increase enrolments, educate parents, drive engagement with upcoming events or fundraisers
  3. It is helpful to know your target audience.  What are your readers trying to achieve? What’s preventing them from doing it? What’s going to happen if they don’t achieve it?  Find out the underlying motivations of your target readers then help them achieve these goals.
  4. Ask yourself these 3 questions: Why are we making it? What content do we need? How do we get that content to accomplish our goals?
  5. Come up with topic ideas and keywords to target
  6. Make a list of relevant terms or topics associated with your school. Think about the keywords that your target audience would use as search words. There are several tools you can use to research the monthly search volume of these terms, such as answerthepublic.com to find keywords and a niche to dominate, and semrush.com to see results on certain keywords to use and which to stay away from. To start, the keywords you use should have a high search volume and low competition.
  7. Create a content calendar
  8. Make a calendar and plan to regularly post. If you wrote one blog a week then after a year you would have 52 additional pages that Google can index and use to direct traffic to your website, compared to the 5-10 pages you have now.
  9. Building amazing content
  10. For a blog to be amazing it needs to be well written, researched, media rich (add an image every 300 words), and formatted for skimming.  Why is it important to have a great blog structure?  This makes your blog readable because it flows well and is organized in a logical way with headings, subheadings, bullets, etc.  It also makes it easier to write.

The Parts of a Blog

  1. Title - what is it about?
  2. Introduction - captures attention and tells the reader what to expect (usually 50-100 words)
  3. Main body - lay out points, share ideas, provide steps of action (subheading sections should be every 300 words or so)
  4. Conclusion - how to move forward; motivates the reader to take action and put the knowledge they gained to good use (about 50 words).  Think about the 3 E’s when you write the conclusion: Empower, Enforce, Encourage.

Measure your blog’s performance

Finally, it is important to have a tool to measure your website’s performance (a popular, and free, one is Google Analytics).  As you add more blogs, these statistics will give you a window into discovering how people are finding your blog and which blogs are most popular.  This will help you know the kind of content your readers like.

There are so many benefits to having a blog on your school's website, and the longer you blog, the more authority you will build over time.  With the tips given here you should be well on your way to creating a successful blog that promotes your school. Happy blogging!
